Claudio MagrisDurante los preparativos de un homenaje póstumo a Goethe (autor de Fausto), alguien se acuerda de su antiguo secretario, que fue despedido por borracho. Lo invitan a Frankfurt. El viejo Stadelmann sale del asilo de pobres donde malvive, para participar en ese acto banal. Durante el viaje afloran sus impresiones y recuerdos, a través de los filtros del tiempo, la amistad y el vino. Un personaje marginal en la vida de Goethe es la excusa para contemplar desde otra perspectiva sus poemas de amor, sus experimentos sobre la teoría de los colores o su visión del mundo, pero también para dejar patente la humanidad de un Stadelmann que se resiste ferozmente a la melancolía del paso del tiempo.
